Ihave always been a fan of the industrial look so now that Steampunk style stuff is really hot there are lots of great findings readily available. This includes these great JHB Steampunk Style buttons . Not many of my clothes have button closures so I thought I could incorporate these cool buttons into jewelry. Off to a book on the subject for a little inspiration Button Ware by Amy Barickman was filled with great stuff that got my creativity flowing. I found a cool light blue marbleized big 80′s earring and the steampunk button looked really cool in it. To secure it I formed a loop at one end of a piece of wire and linked it to the bottom jump ring. I then ran the wire through the shank of the button and looped it through a second time to secure it in place on the wire. All that was left to do was form another loop at the top and link it onto the top jump ring. I took the earring post off and slid a chain through the top jump ring as well.

DIY Thursday: Sew a Custom Jewelry Display
“Recycle, re-use” and “love the earth” were favorite catch phrases of my childhood of the late ’60′s early 70′s. I was given a sewing needle when I was 5 years old and taught how to make basic stitches. So the other day when I was searching the internet for mannequin style jewelry displays, it hit me. Why don’t I take the concept of one of my collections, hands, and make my own hands for display? A quick peek at just one of my hand groupings. They’re scattered all over my studio and house. After some searching, I realized I wouldn’t be able to purchase a sewing pattern for a hand. I had to jump right in and make one myself. I don’t have any training in pattern making but I had to try. I used regular white printer paper and drew an outline of my own hand. I didn’t measure it while I was drawing but I tried to draw the outline 1/4 inch bigger to allow for seams. The finished pattern on my kitchen table.

Repurposed into a Necklace Holder
Hi everyone! Well, I needed more space to hang necklaces so, I decided to make up a wall hanging necklace holder. Like everything else, if I can’t see it, I don’t use it. So, when I have necklaces tucked away in a jewelry box, I have a tendency to forget about them. I started out with a thrifted picture. I removed the backing, picture and glass. I spray painted the frame pink. I knew I would have to do a couple of coats but, after seeing the light pink with the wood grain popping through, I decided I liked that look and didn’t spray any more coats. I covered the picture with this pretty pink toile fabric and stuck it back into the frame. Not really pretty from the back! So, I cut a piece of poster board to fit the back and glued it on. Then I just took some grosgrain ribbon and glued it around the edge of the poster board and frame. I had these little pink chipboard pieces in my scrapbook supplies and decided to glue them onto the glass.

Tweet Ah, the joys of growing older. One such “joy” I discovered was my increasing difficulty in focusing on near objects like computer screens. So reading glasses are necessary. Rather than prop them up on my head, I made an eyeglass necklace for myself. It’s what I call a functional necklace. There are two types of eye glass necklace holders. Both work so the choice is down to personal preference. Hanging Style The first kind shown above consists of special rubber findings which you attach the necklace to instead of clasps. The necklace can be beaded or chain. The sky is the limit as to what beads to use but I would say pick smaller ones. If you decide to use Swarovksi crystals like I did, don’t put them right up to the rubber attachments. I did that initially and wondered why the top of my ear was bleeding! A crystal must have nicked my skin as I pulled off the glasses. I prefer this style as I can just whip off my glasses and not have to fold them.
