Ihave always been a fan of the industrial look so now that Steampunk style stuff is really hot there are lots of great findings readily available. This includes these great JHB Steampunk Style buttons . Not many of my clothes have button closures so I thought I could incorporate these cool buttons into jewelry. Off to a book on the subject for a little inspiration Button Ware by Amy Barickman was filled with great stuff that got my creativity flowing. I found a cool light blue marbleized big 80’s earring and the steampunk button looked really cool in it. To secure it I formed a loop at one end of a piece of wire and linked it to the bottom jump ring. I then ran the wire through the shank of the button and looped it through a second time to secure it in place on the wire. All that was left to do was form another loop at the top and link it onto the top jump ring. I took the earring post off and slid a chain through the top jump ring as well.

I’ve picked up a lot of old buttons and jewelry over the years and like to use them in crafts. I find that many are very beautiful, but really wouldn’t ever be used as a button or pin anymore. So I’m always looking for ways to showcase their beauty other than what they were designed for. Inspired by cute push pins from a catalog (Ballard, of course…), I went through my stash and quickly made up a few for my bulletin board. And I love them! Aren’t these gorgeous? And yet they were hidden away before as clip-back earrings and a bone button with one hole (I can’t figure out how they were sewed on…). Even the regular buttons were just sitting in a container. So then my frugal brain zeroed in on the idea that these would make great little gifts, rescuing more cast-offs! I started tinkering around. Tinkering turned into late nights and early mornings playing with wire, glue, beads and other little pieces of vintage ephemera. I also know that I was turned onto buttons because I love heirlooms. I love that certain things remind people of people they love, or of fond memories, or inspire them in some way. I come from a long line of keepsake collectors. My Gram, for instance, puts little notes with her things that say who gave her a keepsake and when. This sentimentality, the meaning behind certain objects, is what inspires the heart of my business, heirloom button jewelry collections. I hope the bulk of my business turns into the co-design and creation of heirloom collections. That is where I am heading. Have you always made jewelry? Was there a point in your life where you knew you were destined for jewelry making? Definitely not. I was a complete beginner. I continue to take classes and courses on metalsmithing, casting and new beading techniques.
