I bought my engagement ring from Oscar. ? Oscar was fantastic — he is a true craftsman who came up with a beautiful design and implemented it flawlessly, and my fiancee loved the ring he made for her. I knew nothing about engagement rings, but this was a hugely important purchase. ?I went to about 15 different stores, and my fiancee liked Oscar’s designs the best of all of the places we looked. ? ?We were both very comfortable with him, and he gave us some really useful information about options that other merchants simply hadn’t provided (ask him about platinum versus gold rings, for example). Here is a list of the pros and cons I took away from the experience:Cons:Oscar is really busy. ?He is extremely friendly about it, but expect to have to spend some time waiting for him while you are shopping for the ring. And in terms of delivery time, we weren’t in a huge hurry to have the ring delivered, but it did take him 3 weeks to make the ring. ?That said, he knew we weren’t in a huge hurry, and he estimated 4 weeks, so he delivered in under his estimate.Communication: ?Oscar doesn’t immediately return emails. ?He did always eventually return the emails, and you can always call, but he isn’t a blackberry instant responder type. ?On the other hand, do you really need this in a jewelry designer?Pros: Craftsmanship: ?The ring he made was amazing. ? You can look at the workmanship under a microscope. ? He has a background as a purchaser of diamonds, so he gets amazing stones, and he does extremely high quality work with the ring. ?The one part he doesn’t do himself is the small diamonds around the band, but he has a particular craftsman he uses in San Diego who does an amazing job with those stones (micro pave). ? Integrity: ?You can tell that Oscar values his reputation much more than he values a sale. ?He is honest and straightforward in his interactions, and gives you the truth regardless of how it might impact a sale or his profit margin.Experience/Knowledge: ?One thing that drove me nuts when we were looking for rings was everyone telling me that platinum was more expensive than gold. ?I couldn’t understand why, since the metals are the same price now. ?Oscar was the only one who could explain why (there is much more platinum by weight in a platinum ring than in a gold ring of the same size). ?Between his comprehensive knowledge of diamonds and jewelry, you could just see the years of experience, and you were comfortable that you were in good hands.Professionalism: Oscar delivers what he promises. ?He goes out of his way to make sure you are satisfied. ?He knew I wanted the ring a bit early in order to propose the next weekend. ? He arranged to have it shipped back from the artisan who does the micro pave overnight. ? ? When we went to pick up the ring wholesale jewelry, my fiancees hands were a bit swollen, and Oscar and his staff stayed late to make sure the ring would fit comfortably and that we could take it with us that day.
When it came time for my husband to pop the question, he headed downtown in search for the perfect ring for me. ?He search high and low for a particular cut of diamond which can be hard to come by. ?He went to several stores and lo and behold he found it at Oscar’s. ?Oscar pulled out the stone from his personal collection and educated the hubby on the four C’s of the business. ?Since Joe had been running around the diamond district for a good part of the day, Oscar kindly treated him to free lunch while waiting on the ring. ?Oscar and his staff didn’t try to swindle my husband and gave him great customer service. ?With that being said, I went with Joe back to Oscar’s in search of my wedding band. ?One of the store associates assisted us. ?She listened to the type of ring I was looking for and gave her feminine input on what would pair nicely with my engagement ring. ?We made our purchase in under an hour. ?But when we got home my husband saw the 10% discount on Yelp and immediately called Oscar’s about it. ?Even after purchase, they kindly added the discount. ?Thank you Oscar’s for decorating my ring fingers with some beautiful pieces.
I had an amazing experience at Oscar’s Design! I designed the ring for my girlfriend and could not be HAPPIER
Oscar was patient, honest and helpful. I plan on going here many times in the future!
We love Oscar’s! ?great people, great jewelry, and the absolute best prices. ?Do not go to some fancy brand name store, do not buy anything online… go see Oscar. ?My fianc gets complemented on her ring all the time, and it’s all because Oscar took the time to describe to me what it was that’s important in buying an engagement ring. ?We just bought our wedding rings there too.
My fiance and I actually stumbled upon Oscar’s by chance-we arrived early for an appointment at another store downstairs, so we decided to explore the rest of the building. ?Thank goodness we found Oscar’s! ?The second we walked in, everyone was so welcoming and helpful, and the jewelry is just beautiful and of great quality. ?I felt that they truly wanted to help me find “the ring”, instead of just trying to make a sale. ?There are no high-pressure sales tactics here at all, which is rare downtown. ?They truly let the quality of the jewelry sell itself. ?And if you just can’t find that perfect piece…they will design it for you! ?Which is what we decided to do. ?I gave Oscar an idea of what I wanted, he added his creative input, and after exchanging emails (including photos of the wax mold and computer images of the to-be ring) and tweaking things here and there, they created a truly beautiful ring!We didn’t have a huge budget; they will definitely work with you to give you the best for what you can afford. ?I absolutely recommend Oscar’s not just for engagement/wedding rings but for any other jewelry. We ended up also getting my wedding band here, and that is just gorgeous as well. ?You just have to come in to see their pave work, it is just beautiful-everything is lined up so perfectly and the diamonds really sparkle and shine. ?Thanks so much to Oscar, Jean-Claude and Kay for always being so helpful!
The short of it: I didn’t have my wedding ring in time for my destination wedding. The really long of it….I got a call from Oscar 4 weeks after my wedding. He wanted to talk to me after seeing my original review on Yelp! He said he felt bad about my experience at his shop and said that he was upset about my review. He asked me to revisit my review. My dealings with Oscar had to do with my wedding band. It’s an emotional purchase. I agreed to revisit my review to see if I was too subjective/emotional, but before I could, I get an email from Yelp! saying my review has been removed. I can only assume he complained to Yelp! about my review and had it removed. Here is my second attempt to be less emotional and more objective with my experience at Oscars….I came to Oscar’s six weeks before my wedding. I had searched many stores looking for a ring. I found a nice ring at Oscar’s (created by another designer). I was working with Jean-Claude. I asked him if he could make a minor change to a ring he had in the case. He told me ‘no’, but that they could make the ring I wanted. I took the time to draw a sketch to illustrate what I was looking for. Jean-Claude assured me he could create the ring I wanted. I said okay and gave him my deposit. Jean-Claude told me that he would have the ring ready for me in a week. TWO weeks later, I HAD TO CALL them to check on my ring. They said it wasn’t ready yet, but would be done in a few days. An additional week later, I HAD TO CALL AGAIN. They said the ring was ready. I went to the shop to check it out. IT WAS NOTHING LIKE WHAT I REQUESTED. The frustrating part is that I drew a sketch and they had a ring almost exactly like it already in the shop. Obviously Jean-Claude wasn’t paying attention. To top if all off, the center diamond was crooked. Oscar eventually explained the process that they used (casting two different pieces, then putting them together). This was an issue on all 3 rings shown to me, the center stones were crooked on all of rings produced by Oscar.I became pretty upset at this point. Oscar then got involved. He apologized for the mix up. And said they would try it again and have it done in a couple of days. He even said that he would have one of his associates bring it to me when it was completed. It was at this time I asked Oscar, point blank, if he could really accomplish what I wanted. He reassured me that he could.I had to follow up with them again. Four weeks had passed by the time I saw the second ring. I met with his associate near my house (as promised Glass beads, he did have someone drop it off). He said to keep it for the night and to let him know if I wanted to keep the ring. It was a very pretty ring and I did consider keeping it, but again, it was not what I asked for, nor was the center diamond straight…I returned the diamond the next day and asked for a refund of my deposit. He complied. I believe Oscar genuinely tried to send me off as a “happy” customer. He offered a very tempting price reduction on the third attempt at making my ring, due to my experience with his shop thus far. I eventually accepted the offer (due to the savings). I only had two weeks left until I left for my wedding. Needless to say, Oscar’s last attempt at my ring had nicks on it that couldn’t be buffed out and again, the center stone setting was crooked. At this point, I only had about a week before my wedding and I had to go to a different jeweler. The other jeweler (whom I won’t mention here since Yelp! may remove my review for that…) got my ring done in one shot with excellent service and communication, but because I had used up all of my time with Oscar’s, I didn’t have my ring in time for my wedding. ?I had to get married with a substitute steel band…After receiving the call from Oscar but before having my review removed from Yelp!, I was going to call Oscar back and give him a second chance…that way I could detail my review with what I was hoping would be a successful transaction between us. Since it is my belief (no proof, just circumstantial evidence) that he complained to Yelp! and had my review removed…I have no desire to do so. I will not go back to Oscars.
Not only have I featured Oscar on my TV news reports over the years… and not only have I featured Oscar on my Best Buys TV Show… and not only is Oscar listed on my website http://www.AlanBestBuy…… but I also got my wife’s engagement ring from Oscar. ?What more can I say?
So the economy is bad…everyone gets it. Times are tough and we’re all trying to save. Funny thing is, every time I go to Oscar’s his place is packed. I’ve gone on a Saturday afternoon, Tuesday morning, doesn’t matter). The other stores in the same building cannot say the same. On my last visit (to pick out wedding rings now that the engagement business is all done – satisfied customers coming back), this woman commented on how people just keep coming in, to which Oscar replied, “Yes, it gets busy sometimes.” I laughed and interjected saying that Oscar’s is always busy b/c he’s such a good jeweler, but he’s to humble to admit to his popularity. I think the world of Oscar, but judging by how busy he is, so does everyone else.
I recently got my engagement ring here. Spent over 4 months of research and found this cool place. The staff here is not pushy at all. I met Oscar, the owner, and he was just so laid back. I gave him my budget and what I want in a diamond. And he met my expectation. He gave me a good deal on the diamond too. Ask him and he would give you a brief education on diamonds. There’s a parking lot next to the building; it’s $5 for 3 minutes, maximum $12 or $15 (don’t remember) and it’s cheaper on the weekends after hours *sorry I’ll update this next time I get there*
Okay I agree that the owner is the nicest guy and really laid back, but our experience here wasn’t that great. Probably because it was a busy saturday.BIG TIP: do not go to the jewelry district on saturdays… that’s their busiest day of the week and they have a lot of additional hired hands helping. Some who really shouldn’t be doing sales. If you go on a week day you will have a totally unrushed, calm experience with a salesperson who can actually spend time with you.We had this really push guy with a thick russian accent that just kept pestering us with to look at diamonds when all we wanted was to look at ring settings. “How much do you want to spend?” “What size diamond?” “Don’t worry about the ring, not important, the diamond is the important, we can do whatever you want with the ring” “You want to look at some diamonds?” “Yes, no?”At the end of an hour of dealing with this pushy salesperson, my fiancee and I were completely drained and left not feeling any closer to finding the perfect ring…
I rarely give 5 stars, but I felt especially inclined to give Oscar 5 stars. ? I believe Oscar been in the business for, what, 18 years? ?He knows stones, he knows the jewelry market/business, and he knows he wants repeat customers by doing business that make his customers happy. ?There are a SIGNIFICANT number of jewelers in the downtown jewelry district, but I think you’ll find that Oscar’s is typically almost always busy. ?Why? ? Good, honest business generates repeat customers and referrals. ? I always have a pretty good sense of a person’s character/integrity, and I really truly think Oscar is a one-of a kind jeweler. ?He knows that many of his customers come here for very special purchases and they are spending their hard-earned money, and he respects that. ? I haven’t dealt with many high-end jewelers in my life, but you can pretty much guarantee I expect to have a long-term business-type relationship with Oscar (fortunate for him, unfortunate for my budget!), because of a previous purchase. ? If you’re in the market for bling, check this man out!!!
Been our jeweler for 10 years now. Oscar’s an expert gemologist and he provides excellent customer service. You deal with him directly and not with a sales guy like in other jewelry stores. ?Pricing is very competitive, actually better than big jewelry shops like the one down in Tustin.
I got my Simon G. e-ring and wedding band set from Oscars and it was breathtaking. When I first saw the rings, I could’ve sworn I literally stopped breathing for awhile before I started laughing uncontrollably and almost cried at the same time. The rings are just impeccable and a showstopper! Okay, maybe I’m a little bit biased since I did pick the design and this kind of purchase is very personal and subjective. But as a customer, I would say that Oscar delivered and gave me exactly what I expected…a very high quality item at a very reasonable price. After jotting down a few places (through yelp reviews) in the jewelry district, my other half and I went on our quest to find the “perfect” e-ring. The initial process was not easy and it was overwhelming. We were confused as to where to start and I didn’t even have a setting yet. But I knew the diamond shape that I wanted and I was hoping that looking around the stores would give me a better idea of a setting. I bumped into Oscars when looking for a setting and saw some Simon G settings that caught my eye in the store. For our second visit, I told Oscar I wanted to look at diamonds too, and gave him the shape and the specification ranges (5Cs + table % + depth % + GIA + fluorescence, etc) that I’m looking for. Yes, I am very THOROUGH and very PICKY. Oscars hands down has the best/tight range of specifications on the diamond I was looking for compared to this other store downstairs that showed us several oddball stones (visible inclusion smack dab in the center, an IF stone within specs but has a bad cut and no sparkle, EGL not GIA cert, etc.). So we were cornered to pick between worse or better, but none we were sure of. This makes me feel uneasy and is not acceptable after I specifically indicated what I’m looking for. I find ?Oscar and his staff (Jean Claude and Kaye) very pleasant to work with. Oscar is knowledgeable and patient (at times we were there for hours and left with nothing) and did not push us in anyway to make a purchase. And I like his straightforward approach minus the sales pitch (Robbins Bros – I’m looking at you!). The only downside is that Oscar doesn’t provide free replating. But this is not a big issue to me since I did not get white gold nor do I anticipate to service the ring often. A good quality ring should minimize its maintenance. As the old adage goes, you get what you pay for, so I don’t mind paying a bit for a job well done. Here are some tips that I learned from the ring buying process: 1) Diamond: The CUT of the stone is MOST important and you can sacrifice color and clarity. You can have a gorgeous sparkly stone that reflects light in the G-I color and VS2 or lower clarity that people will not be able to tell on a setting; or you can have a D-F color and VVS2+ clarity that is poorly cut and look dull while paying more $$$. I would definitely pick the former. 2) Experience: Ultimately, the quest for the “perfect” stone is more intuitive than it is technical. Each stone is unique and has its own personality. So try to look through as many stones as you can to train your eyes and get a feel for it, get VERY confused – it’s normal, stop for a few weeks, and start looking again. You will know when you find “the one.” I started by looking for “the best” cut, color, and clarity but even though the one I pick is not the best on paper, I’m absolutely in love with it. 3) Setting: Most stores can make the setting you want BUT after much thought I decided to go with a name brand. Gold is gold, platinum is platinum, right? Maybe. But I’m not a jeweler nor do I have their expertise. But I know most rings are not pure and are alloys of different metals that affect the quality of the ring. A name brand gives me some sense of security that ?what I have is of good quality and requires the least maintenance. This is where I lucked out to find both the stone AND setting at Oscars.4) Don’t judge a store by its cover: Many times while I was at Oscars I would see couples come in pearl earrings, glance around, and leave while I’m silently thinking, “their loss”. To be honest, I was skeptical about Oscars too in the beginning since they have limited jewelry displayed, and they don’t market themselves as a specialty (i.e. bridal) jewelry store. But most brides or bride-to-bes tend to have an idea of the setting they want from magazine, celebrities, friends’, websites, childhood fantasies, or their own design, etc. So it is not cost effective or logical for stores to have a large display of sample rings.5) Don’t feel obligated to make a purchase no matter how nice and accommodating the sales person is. It’s their job but it’s your hard-earned money.I hope this review helps in your ring hunting stress…err…process. So if you happen to be in the area, check Oscars out. You don’t have anything to lose
After months of searching for the perfect engagement ring, I came across Oscar’s Design Jewelry, and decided to give Oscar a call. I told him what I was looking for and what I wanted to spend. He said to visit the next time I was in California, and that he’d work with me to get me what I want. That was all I needed to hear before settling on buying a ring from him. From just speaking to him over the phone, I could tell that he’s a good guy. ? When my now fiancee and I arrived to his store, Oscar sat down with us and went over all of our options. I tried on a few different styles of a similar look, and decided on the perfect setting. Then it was on to the most important part– the center stone. After a few minutes of inspections and negotiations, I had settled on a beautiful stone, while remaining within my budget. Oscar is genuine and will get you the best possible piece of jewelry your finances will allow. He’s extremely professional, personable, honest and truly cares about his customers. ? I couldn’t be happier with the purchase, my gorgeous ring, the superb service we received and the quality and craftsmanship of my ring. Oscar made me a custom ring that has been getting compliments ever since I took it out in public. I highly recommend Oscar’s, and will definitely be back myself for the wedding band and other pieces as well. Thanks Oscar!
Beautiful diamonds and Oscar is a doll. ?I checked out many different places in the jewelry district and Oscars fit the bill. ?His diamonds are beautiful and he offers many unique settings. ?I told him my budget (which was not that substantial in terms of diamonds) and he didn’t bat an eye or make me feel the fool. ?He has jewelry for every price range, just let him know and he will hook you up. ?My husband and I have been looking for a jeweler that can be our “go-to” guy and Oscar is definitely him.
I went there to see if they could design a custom wedding band for me. Oscar was so busy, one of his hired helping hands was helping us. We showed her our engagement ring as reference, and let me say, she didn’t handle the ring with respect. She shoved it into the ring sizer very hard, dropped it once on the glass, and that was pretty much it. I took back the engagement ring and left.
I have nothing but good things to say about Oscar’s. ?My fiancee and I actually purchased a white sapphire in lieu of a diamond, for both ethical and financial reasons, and then went to Oscar to design the setting. ?We chose him because of the positive reviews on Yelp, and were definitely glad we did. ?He’s friendly, attentive, takes his time with you, and delivers a beautiful, high quality product. ?Oscar never balked over us wanting an alternative to a diamond. ?And I love my ring! ?It’s a beautiful stone in a very classic yet modern setting, and very well made.
Picked out an engagement ring on my own from another place and my wife didn’t like the setting. ?We took the ring to Oscars and he worked with us back and forth for a few months custom designing exactly what my wife wanted. ?He even sat down in front of the computer with us to design the ring in 3D and made several different iterations of the wax mold for us. ?In the end, the ring turned out amazing and he only charged us for the labor in making the ring (allowing us to trade the old platinum setting in for the new platinum). ?He is one of the few who truly cares about his trade and his clients, and he’s the only jeweler I’ll be going to in the future. ?The only downside is the pricey downtown parking.
I came here a second time after I purchased my wife’s engagement ring. ?This time, I bought my wedding band. ?I give Oscar five star for his patience, demeanor, and attitude. I’m not much of a shopper, but my wife IS. ?I can say that we looked all over downtown for 1) quality engagement rings, 2) fair to good prices, 3) good service and quality support. ?I have to say that Oscar’s has all three aspects down to a science. ?When we were shopping for a ring, we compared his rings to Tiffany’s. ?Most of the similar rings at the same price range were of significant lower quality. ?When you compare price to price, you will typically find lower quality diamonds or craftmanship, or lesser service. ?When we came in a second time to purchase my wedding band, Oscar polished and cleaned the engagement ring to a new shine so the ring looked bigger and brighter for the wedding. ?All I have to say is I’m a very satisfied customer and I’m certain Oscar will satisfy you, too.
I stopped into Oscar’s Design Jewelry after visiting several other shops in los angeles and in orange county. Initially i bought my fiance an engagement ring from Michael B.( very expensive/High end) and i bought the engagement bands with it. However the bands were too big and according to every other shop including Michael B. it could not be resized due to having micro pave diamonds all around. Instead, they would have to make new bands and my current bands would only be worth only their materials (essentially worthless). Long story short, i met Oscar and right away he understood my situation and sized the band and also made sure it was identical to the engagement ring and he made sure to keep the design stamp intact. He saved me thousands and was the nicest and most fair priced jeweler that i have met. Dont get me wrong, Michael B was awesome and nice but they are not even on the same level as Oscar. I will be going back to Oscar for all my jewelery in the future.
They have wonderful customer service, were very knowledgeable and are reasonably priced. Would recommend this place over the other stores in the building. Ask for Kay. She’s great!
Thank you so much, Valencia of Oscar’s Design Jewelry for finding us our wedding rings and sticking within our budget. Thank you Oscar. ?He’s got very classy designs that fits any budget. ?Best to go there on weekdays since we got superb service and attention. I will definitely go back for an upgrade when the time comes
?Thanks again!
